First, I had the opportunity to work with and encourage the board of local pastors that have carried Kings Garden (a home that takes in children whose parents have been incarcerated, or children who are orphaned, or have been abandoned). I had the opportunity to encourage them as they made tough decisions for the future and betterment of the ministry for the children. I shared about this ministry in our July hardcopy newsletter (please write and request one if you didn’t receive it and would like to!). A brief description of this ministry is that it prayerfully seeks out the most destitute neighborhoods and communities, then in cooperation with a church planter, a nurse, a social worker, and volunteers, a transforming community initiative begins. The most needy and malnourished children in the community are fed a nutritious hot meal 5 days a week for 6 months-1 year. They and their parents are introduced to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Lastly, practical teaching is given in health, nutrition, parenting, etc. for the parents, and educational support is provided for the kids. Currently, there are 13 CCMP sites actively transforming communities all over the Philippines, 1,625 meals a week are served, and this food is physical as well as spiritual! Over the years the success rate of CCMP in transforming communities and planting church ministries has been incredible. Thousands of lives have been changed and many thousands more will be. Typically, anti-trafficking ministries focus heavily on rescue, when in actuality that is the easiest part of the fight on anti-trafficking. The more difficult initiatives focus on prevention, and the most difficult of all, the long road of restoration. Currently home to nearly 60 girls ages 5-20, these girls are incredible survivors. While I was there, seven girls were rescued by International Justice Mission, and brought to Happy Horizons. One girl, we will call her Mei for her protection, shared her testimony: When she first came to Happy Horizons she felt hopeless filled with sadness. Despite the efforts of staff and other girls, she barely ate, isolated herself, and cried constantly. After many months of hearing about Jesus’ love for her and God’s desire to heal her, she began to slowly join in some of the activities with the other girls. One of these was a creative arts therapy and crafts class. She began helping clean freshwater clam shells that would become wind chimes. It was a long process, but she shared that when the wind chime was finished, God spoke to her that just like she had cleaned away the grime from the shells, filed them into various shapes and then strung them together to create something beautiful; God wanted to do the same in her. He wanted to wash away her shame, pain, and all her sins. If she let Him, Jesus would lovingly reshape her life, and put her life back together for a beautiful purpose. There they looked for opportunities to pray with and share Jesus with complete strangers. There were great stories shared that night of boldness and breakthroughs. The first day was the most eventful for us. We had shown up before all the activities started. Setting up our Yurts that we would be camping in and the canopies that were set up for our noodle distribution center. Rain threatened all day, but we’d get a light shower here or there, but nothing significant. We had nothing significant, until there was. Right at 11pm, as things were just starting to wind down, we went from very peaceful, calm skies to nearly hurricane power straight winds. A number of us guys grabbed a hold of the canopies as they threatened to blow away. Our cup o’ noodles that were set up neatly were being violently blown off the tables where they were neatly stacked. Two guys started to gather them while me and another guy held onto the canopies. For about 20 minutes that rain and wind pounded us, but we knew if we let go, the canopies were gone. After about 10 minutes, the water was ankle deep. It was at this point that I noticed that the power strip that our lights were plugged into, was submerged under water. Grabbing the cable of the lights plugged into it, I hoisted it onto the table. After 20 minutes had passed, and only two of us were left out there holding down the canopies, the other guy noticed that the power strip that I had pulled up, still had the connection to the extension cord underwater. Grabbing the power strip cable, I tried to lift it out of the water. I emphasize that I tried, because as I pulled the cable, the extension cord was caught under an ice chest, causing it to come unplugged, knocking out our light source and the extension cord fell back into the water. Now I am in ankle deep water, in the dark, with a live extension cord in the water. Thankfully, God protected me until it was unplugged. We then proceeded to bring everything we could, into the main service tent. It was there that we were informed by the other missionaries that they were heading for a hotel. Storm came on so fast, that the ladies Yurt wasn’t closed up and all their stuff was soaked so they didn’t have much of an option, but there were a couple guys that went to “make sure the ladies got there alright”. Me and two other guys stayed and slept in the Yurt. Ours stayed incredibly dry, and had a rubber floor. The water was ankle deep around our Yurt, making it feel like a water bed inside. It wasn’t the most pleasant night's rest, but I did it. The majority of college students also bailed on the camping and headed to the hotel. The next night there was hardly anyone at all camping, though the rest of the missionaries joined us for the second night. All in all, it was an incredible experience and God did a good thing there. When we first came to this island the GSJA (Assemblies of God of Indonesia) was under the leadership of a great man named Pak Kaihatu. He recently passed away a few years ago, but Tim had the opportunity earlier this year to visit with his wife while he was in the same town she lives in for meetings with the printing company in Java about his tablet project for pastors and church planters. Ibu Kaihatu is still a vibrant and passionate woman of God and encouraged Tim and Pak Supri (the leader of our pastor’s training school in Palopo, and a fellow church planter) to keep on expanding the Kingdom of God in Sulawesi. I included a photo of the chapel that a faithful financial partner helped us build there. STAT is our pastor’s training school that we helped revitalize in 2011, and is now running strong! Karisma is the Christian High School that was began on the same campus in 2013 when we realized that many of the students who came to be part of the Bible College level program of STAT, had no high school education. Today Karisma and STAT are both strong programs that are discipling and preparing young pastors to pastor the existing churches of our island. However even more exciting is that in past couple of years Tim has been working with them to see the vision of an expansion come to pass of a special program devoted specifically to church planting! This will equip and train those called to expand the Kingdom of God among the Luwu, Bugis, Enrengkang, Torajan, and Makassar people of South Sulawesi. (Many of the foods featured in the foods blog were meals shared with this couple during our time with them in January.) Ibu Hanni runs Karisma, Pak Supriadi is the President of STAT. As one of their side ministries they have also revitalized a church that was down to 1person in a nearby village. It is now a thriving congregation of over 50. Please pray for them and their three children that are in high school. They are very smart kids who have worked really hard and desire to go to University. This amazing couple serves sacrificially in their roles and their combined income is less than $100 a month. Sambal is added to achieve the desired spice level, and soy sauce is added to achieve the desired saltiness. The leaves are sliced on one side with a knife so the eater can easily open the wrapped rice and spoon out the insides to add to soups usually. However it can also just be dipped in sambal and easily eaten with the hands. A salty fresh parmesan cheese is put on top that doesn’t melt easily being a hard cheese, and chocolate sauce is drizzled on top! It is yum, yum yum! And yes, those are regular French fries in the background just in case you aren’t up for a food adventure. This may look like just another tree, but this is one cacao tree of the many in the chocolate forest that our kids grew up playing in when we lived in the village. Nutmeg was rare and highly valued! Then a trade was proposed...this island with nutmeg under British control for an island the Dutch controlled off the coast of the British colonies in the Americas. And that is how England acquired Manhattan from the Dutch! It is the bark of the cinnamon tree that after it is peeled off the tree dries and curls into what we know as the cinnamon stick. I love the flavor and smell of the local Sulawesi cinnamon. Literally like red hot candies! You can buy it very cheap in the market and grind it yourself (it’s always best fresh ground), but you cannot buy it outside of Indonesia because a large company has contracted nearly all Sulawesi cinnamon for it’s business. An orphanage that Asia’s Little Ones has partnered with since its inception, but with whom we were recently struggling to get communication from. The trip was just over a week, and while part of it was visiting and ministering at the orphanage, Treasure House. The other part of the trip was helping to host a team of grad students from South Eastern University as they explored missions and ministry in Pacific Oceania. They are surrounded by Catholicism and Christianity and yet as the minority, there is a deep division between most native Fijians and those of Indian decent, and a great darkness still blinds them. I walked around a Hindu temple and the spiritual resistance was palpable. I went to a soccer game at an Indian (Hindu) school and it was heavy there too. It is also not lost on me that everywhere the demonic strongholds of Hinduism become deeply rooted; the suffering of the poor, widow’s and orphans is greater, the value of women decreases, and the evils of human trafficking prevail. However, because of Jesus, there is always hope. I had the opportunity to visit with a pastor who shared his testimony of coming to Jesus after being a Hindu priest, and his church was dynamic! More church plants reaching the Hindu community are desperately needed across the country. Also after many years of no Assemblies of God missionary presence, we have new missionaries there! Well most of the children that come to the orphanage are also Indian, and were orphaned by abandonment. Sadly, calls come every month from the dept. of welfare asking if there is room for another child, and unfortunately because of space and department staffing the home is already at full capacity and unable to take in any more. What happens to the children who can’t come? They are sent to a Hindu orphanage, and receive the bare minimum to survive since it is believed in Hinduism that current social status and suffering in this life is punishment or karma for things done in the past life. Oh, how I wish we could take in every child that needs us, and wrap them in the loving arms of Jesus! Raising them with the truth that they are beautifully and wonderfully made. Please pray for Treasure House and for the 21 children that they care for. (Five of these are severely disabled, are highly special needs cases and will require lifetime care). And please pray for the needs of the ministry! The land owner they were renting from passed away suddenly, and the day before I arrived, Treasure House received an eviction notice. Someone found him and took him to a nearby hospital, who called the orphanage and said, “Please take this baby, there is nothing we can do for him. He will most likely die.” It was a long and difficult road for this little boy, but with patience and prayer, the love of Jesus has a healing touch. Today he is a healthy little boy full of hope, and joy, and mischief! In January the spring semester started with new students! One of those is the niece of our foster daughter (Rifka) who lived with us nearly 10yrs ago! They are the largest tribe in South Sulawesi with over 6 million people and less that 0.01% are followers of Jesus. What is our Bugis Church Planting Initiative? It is our desire to place church planters among the Bugis tribes with Business as Missions being the model. Ultimately that means that we find a church planter that starts to travel into a specific town in the Bugis area to evaluate what is a niche’ they could fill. Ultimately we would start a small business for them and provide them with a salary for the first year and taper off the following year as they should have the business well enough established to start subsidizing their salary. They will not build a “Church” because in these areas being most of the time 100% Muslim, a “church” becomes a hinderance to the gospel and can be a target for violence. A Bugis Church Plant takes somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000 for the two year launch.
